Leana Islam was born in 1977 to a German mother and Saudi Arabian father. She spent the majority of her childhood and youth in England with a three-year interlude in Saudi Arabia, before pursuing a university degree in History and English literature in Germany. Leana’s personal experience as a child of many cultures and as an Arab woman has inspired her to support vulnerable groups, especially women and children, in obtaining the one indispensable asset needed for life – education. After university, she worked for Femmes Africa Solidarité in Geneva, Switzerland. She then moved to Africa, and lived in both Rwanda and Burundi. In Rwanda she worked on women’s and children’s issues for organizations such as such as Care International, Women for Women International, The Initiative for Inclusive Security, and Population Services International. In Burundi, Leana worked for the education section of UNICEF. After two and a half years in Africa, Leana relocated to Syria where she is currently the Situation Analysis Coordinator for UNICEF.
